Photos Along the Way

When we moved to Coquitlam we felt there was a missing element in our lives: a pet. So after a meaningless visit to the local BCSPCA we ended up coming home with this little guy. He has become an important part of our family and we are forever grateful that we rescued him.

The Hornby Island summer camp has an activity called the Leap of Faith where you climb to the top of a 20 foot phone pole and stand on the top of it and jump off to try and grab a trapeze. This is a picture of Sam trying it. We were all nervous and shaky but we had lots of fun!

During our week and a half at Hornby island we all slept in tents, every night! My tent is the one on the right. It served me well but boy was it tight quarters!

The summer of 2018, before our last semester of classes I was lucky to have my brother (right), sister (middle), and best friend (left) come out to visit me and my partner. We got to explore Vancouver and later the Rocky mountains. It was a blast!

One of the biggest reason I got through the Douglas College Interpreting Program was the support I got from my amazing partner, now fiance. Through thick and thin we have been a team and she consistently picked me up when I was down.

We are lucky enough to have the Douglas College campus right next to a beautiful lake. It often gave me a nice break from school via a 20 minute walk around the lake. The fall gave us beautiful colours and the winter gave us an unbelievable Christmas light show around the entire lake!

The week we spend at Seabeck Deaf-Blind Camp was amazing. We learned so much and got a whole new perspective on the world. The community is as strong as ever.

Our home in Coquitlam was located a 2 minute walk from a beautiful park called Mundy Park. The park has trails, trees, lakes, and much more. It was often a place to go for runs or walks when the stress of life was getting to be a little too much.

I had the opportunity to participate in a charity hockey game between BC's Deaf hockey team (The Rockies) and the Hockey Community Team. This is where I met a lot of my Deaf hockey friends and ended up joining a recreational league with them.

When I went home for Christmas after my first semester at Douglas I was lucky enough to go to an outdoor hockey game in Buffalo, NY to watch Canada vs. US in Junior Men's Hockey. It was an amazing experience.

I have always loved the outdoors and loved the snow. The mountains let me do both and I loved every minute of it. Talk about Self Care!

My last two practicum blocks were in my home town of Ottawa, ON. I hadn't spent an extended period of time in Ottawa in quite a while so I was glad to be back. I had forgotten just how cold it got but I had also forgotten how beautiful the cold makes the landscape. This is a shot of the Rideau Canal and many families and friends having a skate on the frozen waterway.

Being from Ottawa, the mountains were almost a myth to me, how big were they? Are they really that beautiful? Well, they are really big and even more beautiful than I could have imagined. Hiking mountain ranges was one of the hardest but most rewarding things I got to do while out west.

Camping at Hornby Island often meant late night campfire chats with classmates.

My first practicum was in Moncton, NB. A place I had never been. It was all new, the city, the people, and of course - interpreting for real. In my short time in Moncton I got to appreciate the small town feel of the city and got a few chances to explore some areas - including some local street art.

When I was accepted into Douglas' Interpreting Program my partner also accepted a new job in Coquitlam. Therefore, the logical decision was to move from Kitsilano, a place we loved, to Coquitlam!

After getting engaged the summer before the Fall semester my fiance and I decided it would be best to move back to Ottawa in December 2018. That meant that for the final semester of practicum I would be flying almost as much as Nigel...almost. I thought it as no big deal but with winter storms and flight delays it sure can take a lot out of you.
